Motorola had recently confirmed that its upcoming Moto Edge S will launch with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8-series chipset “soon”. Now, just hours after Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 870 5G chipset, the Lenovo-owned company has revealed that its next flagship will debut with the new Qualcomm chipset on January 26 in China. Motorola took to the Chinese microblogging site Weibo to announce the development
The Moto Edge S will be the first smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 870 5G chipset. The new Qualcomm chipset offers the highest clock speed ever for a mobile platform to date. Although it packs the previous generation Cortex-A77-based Kryo 585 cores, the CPU cores operate at a maximum frequency of 3.2GHz. The Snapdragon 888 has its prime core operating at 2.84GHz.
Moto Edge S launch confirmed for January 26
Motorola has been teasing the new phone for a while now. The company is re-entering the Chinese flagship smartphone market with the Moto Edge S. It will be the first Moto Edge series phone to launch in China.
Apart from the processor, not much else is officially known about the upcoming Motorola phone as yet. However, rumors suggest it will sport a 6.7-inch Full HD+ display with dual punch-hole cutouts and an odd 105Hz refresh rate. Motorola may pair the Snapdragon 870 chipset with 8GB or 12GB of RAM and at least 128GB of storage.
There could be a 64-megapixel primary camera on the back. The quad rear-camera setup will also reportedly feature a 16-megapixel ultrawide camera and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The fourth sensor should be a macro camera. The dual punch-hole cutouts on the front may house a 16-megapixel selfie shooter along with an 8-megapixel secondary ultrawide sensor. A side-mounted fingerprint scanner, a 5,000mAh battery, and Android 11 are also expected to be pat of the package.
There are reports that the Moto Edge S is the same device that is doing rounds on the internet with the codename “Nio”. The Motorola Nio has already picked up FCC, TUV Rheinland, and 3C certifications. Those certifications have revealed that the handset will pack a 5,000mAh battery with support for 20W fast wired charging.
A Geekbench listing last month revealed that the “Nio” phone will get 8GB of RAM and will run Android 11 out of the box. It also revealed the presence of the Adreno 650 GPU, which is what we get with the Snapdragon 870. In all likelihood, the Motorola Nio is none other than the Moto Edge S. We’ll know for sure in about a week from now.
Price and availability details of the Moto Edge S are still a mystery. It’s also unclear if Motorola plans to bring the new device outside China as well. Hopefully, we’ll get an official word on it during the launch on January 26th. We’ll keep you updated as and when the company makes a new announcement.
