Snapchat's New Camera Feature Enhances In-App Shopping Experience

Snapchat camera has received a myriad of new features. Snap announced some major upgrades that will let them use the service differently.

The updates include some new shopping features. Aside from AR (augmented reality) “try-on” services, a new gifting feature has been added for creators.

As far as shopping is concerned, Snap announced several tools that will simplify in-app shopping for users.

Snapchat camera gets new shopping-centric features

Snapchat’s “scan” feature currently allows the app’s camera to detect Amazon products and food labels. It is now getting a slew of new shopping capabilities.

The Snapchat camera will recommend clothing items using a feature called “Screenshop” when you scan an outfit. Furthermore, Snap is expanding AR features that allow users to try on makeup, accessories, and even clothes.

Snapchat already boasts similar features, however, the latest version help users control their try-on experiences using gestures and voice commands. For instance, Snapchat users can ask to see an item in a different pattern or color.

Other new features

Moreover, Snapchat will be adding two new Snap Minis. Minis are HTML5 apps built within the app and they ensure upgraded shopping experiences.

In fact, one of the Snap Minis designed for the eCommerce platform, Poshmark. It will help users browse and buy products. It will help users browse and buy products.

The second Snap Minis is developed by Ticketmaster and it allows groups of friends to search for upcoming shows and buy tickets together.

Other popular platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram are also experimenting with new shopping features. Instagram and TikTok are considering adding shopping features to live video.

However, Snap seems focused on adding the social aspect of buying. In an interview with Engadget, Snap’s Director of Product Will Wu admitted that he does not consider eCommerce as an ideal category for minis, even in the future.

Wu said the company is looking for new minis experiences that enable new types of unparalleled utility within Snapchat. Moreover, Snap is focusing on creator-centric features to help profiles with more users to make money off its platform.

Snapchat’s monetization efforts have primarily revolved around Spotlight. This feature pays users based on the popularity of their clips. With 125 million users, the TikTok-like feature is set to be launched on the web.

Gifting is another way creators can leverage their audience and make money from their Snapchat followers. You can use this feature to purchase stickers for Snap Stars.

Users that buy stickers will be able to initiate a conversation with the Snap Star. Creators will earn a portion of the revenue from the purchase.
