Motorola Announces Moto G Stylus 5G, It's Most Affordable 5G Phone

Motorola has announced a new stylus-equipped mid-range smartphone, the Moto G Stylus 5G. It’s essentially a 5G version of the Moto G Stylus launched in January this year, with a few other minor changes.

Most notably, the new smartphone switches to the Snapdragon 480 SoC to enable sub-6GHz 5G connectivity (the 4G version has Snapdragon 678). The two chipsets feature the same CPU configuration but the former is slightly lower-clocked. However, it somewhat compensates for that shortcoming with a better Adreno 619 GPU and a more power-efficient 8nm architecture. Motorola is also offering more RAM and storage capacity on the Moto G Stylus 5G (6GB/256GB).

Other big differences between the two Moto G Stylus variants include the battery capacity. The new phone gets a bigger 5,000mAh battery (4,000mAh on 4G model) though the charging speed is still limited to 10W. Motorola has also moved the fingerprint reader to the back, after having embedded it into the power button on the 4G model. As you’d expect, the Moto G Stylus 5G ships with Android 11 out of the box.

The rest of the specs remain the same. Both phones feature a 6.8-inch IPS LCD screen with an FHD+ 1080 x 2400 pixels resolution. It’s a plastic body with a plastic back. Both phones also support a single SIM and feature a dedicated microSD card slot.

The rear camera arrangement may look different but you’re getting pretty much the same set of sensors, except for the macro camera. Motorola has replaced the 2-megapixel sensor with a 5-megapixel one. Otherwise, there’s the same 48-megapixel primary sensor, 8-megapixel ultrawide lens, and the 2-megapixel depth sensor. The front-facing camera is a 16-megapixel sensor.

Other key specs include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5, 3.5mm headphone jack, USB Type-C port, loudspeakers, dual microphones, and built-in stylus support, of course. The new phone has a dimension of 169.54 x 77.48 x 9.35mm and weighs 217.5 grams.

Moto G Stylus 5G: price and availability

The Moto G Stylus 5G is the first 5G-capable device in the Moto G lineup. As you can see from the specs above, it’s a step-up version of the 4G model. These upgrades come at a price though. Motorola is charging $100 more for the new phone, making it cost $400 at launch. That’s still competitive pricing from the company though, considering the device offers 5G connectivity and built-in stylus support.

The Moto G Stylus 5G will be available for purchase on June 14th, 2021. Motorola is offering the phone in a single Cosmic Emerald color.
