The Galaxy Watch 4 series will not only see a major shift on the software front but hardware as well. Samsung has reportedly developed a new chipset called Exynos W920 for its upcoming wearables.
According to a SamMobile report, the Exynos W920 will bring about a significant performance boost over its predecessor, the Exynos 9110. The publication is reporting 1.25X faster processing times as well as 8.8X smoother graphics performance. The new chipset is also reportedly paired with 1.5GB of RAM. The Exynos 9110-powered Galaxy Watch 3 has 1GB of RAM.
All these improvements should mean smoother performance on the Galaxy Watch 4 series. We should see improvements in app loading times as well as their functionality.
Galaxy Watch 4 series will get a new Exynos processor
Samsung has been using the Exynos 9110 chipset in its smartwatches for a few years now. The Galaxy Watch, which arrived in August 2018, was the first to utilize it. All subsequent models – the Galaxy Watch Active, Galaxy Watch Active 2, and the Galaxy Watch 3 – have featured the same SoC.
However, with the Galaxy Watch 4 series, things are changing drastically. For one, Samsung is ditching its in-house Tizen OS in favor of Google’s Wear OS. The two companies have collaborated to develop the new platform.
This move will address one of the biggest disadvantages of Tizen – poor third-party app support. With Wear OS, pretty much every major Android app will be available on the Galaxy Watch 4. And to ensure that its fans still enjoy the same look and feel, Samsung is also said to be offering a custom UI on top.
But changes aren’t seemingly limited to the software front. Since Wear OS will bring additional capabilities to Samsung’s next-gen smartwatches, including support for more apps, the company is ensuring that the device’s performance isn’t affected by introducing newer and more powerful internals.
There are some design changes in tow as well, though the overall shape and size aren’t changing much. The side buttons are flatter, while the silicone straps now attach more tightly to the watch body, leaving no gap. Samsung has also seemingly managed to reduce the display bezels.
The Galaxy Watch 4 series consists of two models. The Classic model will feature a sporty look and the signature rotating bezel. The vanilla Galaxy Watch 4 will sport a more sleek design. Both models will likely break cover on August 11, alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Z Flip 3, and the Galaxy Buds 2. Not a very long wait now before things go official.
