Samsung‘s October security update is available for the Galaxy S10 series and the Galaxy Tab S6. The latter is the first Galaxy tablet to get the latest security patch. The new SMR (Security Maintenance Release) has already been rolled out to dozens of smartphones.
As of this writing, the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+ are receiving the October 2022 Android security patch in Switzerland. Samsung will soon expand the rollout to the rest of Europe and gradually cover units in other regions. The updated firmware version for the phones is G97*FXXUGHVJ1. The build number suggests the new software package contains more than just the latest vulnerability fixes. Unfortunately, Samsung has yet to reflect this release on its official update tracker. So, we can’t confirm what else the phones are getting.
Don’t be hopeful for any major new feature, though. The Galaxy S10 series is almost four years old now. Debuting with Android 9 Pie in early 2019, the phones are done getting major feature updates. They won’t get Android 13. Samsung also dropped the Galaxy S10 lineup, including the 5G model, to quarterly security updates earlier this year, though updates are still coming monthly. The latest release may bring some system stability and reliability improvements along with this month’s vulnerability fixes. Maybe some bug fixes too.
Samsung has already revealed that the October SMR patches about 50 vulnerabilities in its Galaxy smartphones and tablets. These include fixes for Android OS issues from Google as well as several Galaxy-specific vulnerabilities. Some of the issues patched this month were labeled critical and high-severity flaws by the Korean firm, including one that allowed unauthorized access to secure memory.
The Galaxy Tab S6 is also getting the October security update
These security fixes are also rolling out to Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S6. The tablet is picking up the latest update with firmware version T865XXU5DVJ1 in Asia and Australia, and T865XXU5DVH2 in Europe. A wider rollout should follow in the coming days. The device is getting some system stability improvements with this release.
The Galaxy Tab S6 also launched in 2019 running Android 9 Pie out of the box. It will likely not get Android 13. Nonetheless, if you’re using this tablet or any of Samsung’s Galaxy S10 phones, the October security update should be available to you shortly if it hasn’t already arrived. You can manually check for updates from the Settings app or wait for a notification prompting you to download and install the new software package.
