Galaxy S23 Ultra and Pixel 7 Pro selfie cameras compared

Over the past few days, plenty of new details about the Galaxy S23 Ultra‘s camera system have emerged. We even saw a few low-light and zoom camera samples from the phone. All of those samples came from the same source, Twitter user Edwards Urbina. While it’s a mystery how they manage to get the new Samsung flagship ahead of next week’s launch, they continue to share camera samples from the device. Recently, Edwards posted a selfie taken from the Galaxy S23 Ultra and compared it with the Pixel 7 Pro. Here’s how the two pictures stack up.

It’s immediately noticeable that the selfie from the Galaxy S23 Ultra is sharper than the Pixel 7 Pro. The Samsung handset is offering more details on the face, while subject separation also appears better. Google’s phone has softened the edges in some areas. Colors also appear a bit washed out on the Pixel. Overall, the unannounced Galaxy flagship comfortably outshines the Pixel in this selfie comparison.

However, this isn’t quite a fair one-to-one comparison. The subject is angled differently between the two photos, which may have affected the lighting. Also, the photo from the Galaxy S23 Ultra is a little zoomed in, which suggests that it was taken in selfie portrait mode. The Pixel’s shot, meanwhile, appears to be a regular selfie, which means it’s missing out on some software optimizations.

Take nothing away from the Galaxy S23 Ultra, though. The device that Edwards has is likely running pre-release software. By the time the phone reaches consumers, it should get some optimizations to further improve the image quality. So it will only get better from here. It appears Samsung switch from a 40MP selfie camera on the Galaxy S22 Ultra to a 12MP unit on the succeeding model was a well-thought decision. This early selfie sample is quite promising.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra is shaping up to be a photography powerhouse

It’s not just the selfie camera that may wow Galaxy S23 Ultra users. The new Samsung flagship is shaping up to be a photography powerhouse. The handset will bring a 200MP camera on the back. It’s getting an upgraded ultrawide lens as well. And even though the two zoom cameras are unchanged hardware from last year, leaked samples have suggested notable quality improvements in zoom shots as well. Exciting times are ahead for Samsung fans. Stay tuned for the big Galaxy S23 launch event on February 1.
