Samsung‘s April update for the Galaxy S22 series is available widely in the US. The company began the rollout in the first week of the month but it initially only covered the factory-unlocked units. It has now released the latest security update for the carrier-locked variants as well.
The April SMR (Security Maintenance Release) for the carrier-locked Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S22 Ultra in the US comes with the firmware build number S90xUSQU2CWCF. While the official changelog for the unlocked units didn’t mention anything apart from the latest security patch (the build number didn’t suggest anything either), carrier variants are getting more than that. The changelog says the phones are getting functionality improvements for the camera and gallery.
By the looks of it, Samsung is pushing Image Clipper to its 2022 flagships. The April update for the Galaxy S22 series in Europe and other markets brought this new feature. Users in the US may also be getting it. Introduced with the Galaxy S23 series earlier this year, this feature lets you quickly crop out a subject from an image and save it as a separate image. When viewing images in the gallery app, you can press and hold on a subject in a photo to crop it out instantly.
Galaxy S22 phones get the April update in the US
Samsung started rolling out the April security patch to its Galaxy devices in late March. It has already pushed the new SMR to dozens of Galaxy models. The update contains patches for more than 70 security issues. Some of these vulnerabilities only exist in Galaxy devices, while others affect the entire Android ecosystem. At least five vulnerabilities patched this month were labeled critical by Google and Samsung. Some of those could lead to remote code execution, potentially allowing a remote attacker to take control of your phone without your knowledge.
If you’re using a Galaxy S22 phone in the US, all of these security fixes and potential new features will be available to you soon. As always, you can check for updates from the Settings app. Go to the Software update menu and tap on Download and install. If an update is available, you will be prompted to download it. If you don’t see any updates, wait a few days and check again. You may also get a notification when a new OTA (over the air) update reaches your Galaxy smartphone.
