Samsung is rolling out a new software update to the Galaxy Z Fold 2 in the US. The update brings all the vulnerability fixes that are part of the December SMR (Security Maintenance Release). There are more than 60 of those. The 2020 foldable phone isn’t eligible for Android 14, so there is no new feature here. The Galaxy S23 series, meanwhile, is receiving the latest SMR globally.
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 picks up the December security update
The December SMR is available for both carrier-locked and unlocked variants of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 in the US. Samsung is pushing the update with the build numbers F916USQS5KWK1 and F916U1UES5KWK1, respectively. The official changelog includes three generic pointers saying updates may bring new features, improvements, bug fixes, and security enhancements.
Unfortunately, the aging foldable doesn’t seem to be getting anything more than the latest security patches. Samsung has revealed that the December SMR fixes more than 60 vulnerabilities affecting various system apps, services, and components. At least seven of those are critical security flaws in Android OS. The new security release contains over a dozen Galaxy-specific patches too.
If you are holding on to this three-year-old Samsung foldable in the US, these security fixes will be available to you soon. The Korean firm will bring the update to other markets in the coming days. As said earlier, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 isn’t eligible for Android 14. It will no longer receive major feature updates from Samsung. Security updates will come at least until the second half of 2024.
The latest security patch is widely available for the Galaxy S23 series
The Galaxy S23 series was the first Samsung phone to receive the December SMR. The Korean firm released the update for the carrier-locked variants in the US last week. A few days back, factory-unlocked units joined the party too. The new SMR is now available for these phones globally, including in Europe, Asia, and Africa. International Galaxy S23 units are receiving the update with the build number S911BXXS3BWKC.
If you are using the Galaxy Z Fold 2 or a Galaxy S23 model, watch out for a notification prompting you to download the latest security update. Alternatively, you can navigate to Settings > Software update > Download and install to check for updates on your own. Note that OTA (over the air) updates are released in batches, so you may not see an update right away. You can check back anytime, though.
