Mobile World Congress is coming up next week and Lenovo is now rumored to be showing off the Magic Bay Module at the event. If that name captures your attention, you’re not alone. It had us wondering what it is and as it turns out, the Magic Bay Module is an accessory for your laptop. Its purpose is to allow you to attach additional displays to the main laptop display.
You can technically do this if you use a laptop’s HDMI out to an external monitor and use a docking station to connect multiple displays. This module, however, appears to fit right onto the laptop with no need for any sort of docking station. So you could use this with a Lenovo laptop while out and about and get up to three displays in one machine.
It’s a wild idea for a portable computing device that may never really become popular (if Lenovo ever sells it). However, the productivity potential is there. And there is surely a segment of consumers who would love to have this thing. It’s also technically not the first time we’ve seen something like this. Several years ago Razer brought a Blade laptop concept to CES that had three displays. Ultimately, it never went into production. Lenovo is also reportedly bringing a laptop with a folding display to the show.
The Lenovo Magic Bay Module leak doesn’t state it’s a concept
Since there’s no mention of this being a concept, it seems likely that this is going to be a product Lenovo sells. It’s still unclear when it would be available or how much it would cost, however. Since these are displays, there’s potential for them to cost hundreds depending on the display quality. The displays are also hinged so they can flip around and you can adjust the angle. This could potentially add to the cost due to additional moving parts and additional engineering.
It’s also not mentioned which Lenovo laptops would support this accessory. Or whether or not it even needs to be a Lenovo laptop. That being said, if Lenovo does show this off at Mobile World Congress, these may be things the company shares as part of the announcement.
Lenovo’s new concept laptop can use the sun for power
Yes, this is referring to solar power. Lenovo will apparently bring a solar-powered laptop concept to Mobile World Congress. Since this is said to be a concept product, it’s not something you’ll be able to buy. There is always the chance that Lenovo will transition it to a product that will be available to consumers, though. Razer has done this a few times, and so have other companies.
The laptop is part of Lenovo’s Yoga brand which is evident by the ultra-thin design. Based on the leaked images (which come from Evan Blass on X), the solar panels for this concept are on the lid. So it should charge easily when the lid is closed, and depending on the angle of the sunlight might be rechargeable when in use as well. Laptop battery life has gotten pretty good over the past few years when it comes to anything that isn’t a gaming laptop.
Solar power capabilities have the potential to push battery life on laptops even further. It’s also a unique idea that could drive lots of interest from consumers.
