Summary: The iPhone 17 Pro will have a supersized camera bar on the back, and the reason behind the change has seemingly been revealed. Apple will use a different/larger camera sensor for the periscope telephoto camera, which will require some internal changes.
It’s not exactly a secret that the iPhone 17 Pro will have a large camera back on the back, and now we know why. Renders of the phone’s internals have leaked, giving us an idea as to why Apple made the change.
The reason behind a supersized camera bar on the iPhone 17 Pro has just been revealed
If you check out the images below, you’ll see the iPhone 17 Pro (right) next to the iPhone 16 Pro (left). The iPhone 17 Pro is expected to ditch a 12-megapixel periscope telephoto camera for a 48-megapixel periscope telephoto camera.
That camera will offer the same 10x optical zoom level, but the sensor will be larger. Considering that Apple has no intention of moving the sensor itself, it will rotate it, which will require more space on the right side.
That change will leave no space for the LiDAR module, so it will have to be moved. Based on what we see here, the LiDAR scanner will be pushed all the way to the right side, along with the LED flash and a microphone.
Take the information with a grain of salt, though
That could explain why the huge camera bar will be included on the phone. Anything else would make the camera situation look weird. Do note that this is not an official confirmation, however. In fact, the info comes from a non-frequent source, so… take it with a grain of salt.
The Apple iPhone 17 Pro is expected to arrive in September. That’s when Apple usually announces its new iPhones. The device will launch alongside the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone 17 Air. The ‘Air’ model will replace the ‘Plus’ variant that has been launching for years.
