Samsung Chromebox Updated With An Intel Core i5 Sandy Bridge Processor

Samsung and Google have always tried to convince potential costumers that Chrome O.S. does not need top of the line specifications to run smoothly, as it is meant simply for web browsing. This morning, however, Samsung quietly upgraded the specs in its Chomebox computer.

The previous Chromebox was powered by an Intel Celeron B840 processor, but that has been replaced with a much faster Core i5 chip. The Chromebox still won’t set any records, though, as it is using the Core i5-2450M processor, which is a last generation chip. It uses an Intel HD Graphics 3000, as well as 4GB of RAM and 16GB of flash storage. For what it’s worth, the new Samsung Chormebox XE300M22-A01US is using the same chip that the demo units were using at Google I/O last year.

Even though it’s not using the most recent chip, the new Chromebox should still be able to handle most basic tasks without a stutter. This includes things such as HD video streaming and heavy web browsing.

As far as ports and connectivity go, the Chromebox hasn’t changed a bit in this revision. You’ll find 6 USB 2.0 ports, WiFi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, DisplayPort and DVI.

Some discrepancies arrive when trying to actually trying buy the updated Chormebox, though. The unit appears to be out of stock at most retailers, though some are selling it for around $400. That’s $80 more than the less-powerful Chromebox sells more.

You may remember that Samsung released a redesigned Series 3 Chromebox earlier this year, using the same specs as the 2012 model. So it’s a little bit confusing as to why the company would release yet another model so soon. It could be that Samsung is looking to offer the entry-level Intel Celeron powered unit for around $329 and a more powerful model for around $400.

Either way, the Chromebox is definitely something to consider if you are looking for a second computer or if you are a student. Whether you could use it as your primary machine is up to you. If you live fully in the cloud, then it may be worth a shot. Will be you be buying the new Chromebox? Let us know down in the comments!
