Many things can be attributed to HTC’s struggles over the past two years or so, but one of the biggest, has been the company’s inability to update its devices to the latest version of Android. The company would launch a device, then less than six months later, launch a successor to it. Recently, however, this has improved for HTC and devices have been receiving timely updates, but some news today contradicts the company’s recent doings, and not in a good way.
Since Android 4.2 was announced last fall, very few devices that do not carry Nexus branding have been updated to the latest and greatest version of Android. In fact, HTC’s latest One flagship doesn’t launch with the latest version of Android. Recently, however, we’ve seen some solid information that suggests the HTC One X, released in the Spring of 2012, will soon be updated to Android 4.2.2, which is great. But, according to a reliable HTC leakster, that is the last update HTC has planned for the One X.

According to @LLabTooFeR, Android 4.2.2 will be the last significant update for the HTC One X, meaning that it will not see Key Lime Pie, or at least that it’s unlikely. This isn’t the first time HTC customers have been let down by their manufacturer, though. The DROID Incredible 2 was promised Android 4.0 by the end of August and has yet to see an update or even an acknowledgement from HTC. The Rezound, which offers similar specs to the HTC One X, has been stuck with Ice Cream Sandwich despite promises it will be updated. HTC has an unfortunate history when it comes to software updates, and this is just another way they’re discouraging consumers from buying their products.
I’d take this with a grain of salt, though. It’s hard to know what Android manufacturers actually have in mind when it comes to Android updates, especially one as unreliable and inconsistent as HTC. HTC has not promised an Android 4.2.2 update for the One X in any official capacity, so with this rumor, we’re piling speculation on top of speculation.
