7-Inch WikiPad Gaming Tablet Makes Its Way Through The FCC

WikiPad’s gaming tablet has had quite the adventurous life so far, and it has yet to even hit the market. The tablet was originally supposed to launch as a 10-inch device sometime last fall. Shortly after it had started production, however, the company stopped in order to perfect the device’s gaming features and abilities. Well, while they were doing that, the company’s screen supplier informed them that the device’s screen had been discontinued. This caused the company to rethink its entire strategy. The company, as well as the community, had always worried about the price of the WikiPad being too high. With the price concerns and manufacturing issues, the company decided to push back the idea of a 10.1-inch WikiPad and focus on a 7-inch model. The company set a goal to launch the 7-inch model by spring, and what is it right now? Spring.

Earlier today, we saw the 7-inch WikiPad gaming tablet pass through the FCC and flashed some of its insides. I really don’t know what we’re looking at here, but it’s certainly good that the device has made its way through the Federal Communication Commission without any hiccups. At this rate, it seems very likely that the company will meet its spring deadline and bring the device to market before then.

The WikiPad certainly does not include specs that will blow you away, but they are still respectable. We’re looking at a Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1280 x 800 display, and a full, 12 button gamepad.

  • Tegra 3 quad-core
  • 1280 x 800 IPS display
  • Full size gamepad (12 buttons total)
  • MicroSD expansion slot
  • Jelly Bean 4.1

Here’s the thing, though. The device is designed to be a gaming device, but because of the delays it has suffered, it’s launching much later than originally expected, and as such the internals have not been updated. The Nexus 7 launched with the same quad-core processor nearly a year ago, and it certainly has more than its fair share of lagging issues. The display is also really disappointing. Who wants to play games or watch HD movies with such a poor resolution?

The WikiPad is going to launch with a price tag of $250. Will it succeed? Personally, I’m doubtful, but we will see.
