The Asus Memo Pad Smart 10 is a budget range full size tablet that Asus has seen moderate success with. They hope to build upon their successes with the second generation by building in some rather impressive new specs slated for release sometime this summer. Hopefully they can come up with a name that rolls off the tongue a bit easier too.
It looks like ASUS will be going with a full 1080p display, a 1.5Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro Processor paired with only 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, LTE and an oddly impressive 13 megapixel camera. All in all a very well spec’d out tablet, especially if they can keep the price around $300 like the previous model.
Speaking of the previous model they certainly stepped their game up in a few areas, while a few others were apparently breezed in development. The Snapdragon S4 is a marked improvement over the Tegra 3 the old Memo Pad shared with the Nexus 7. They really bumped up the rear camera from 5MP to 13, so if taking pictures with a 10 inch tablet somehow appeals to you then this might be your ticket. Now for the negatives, 1GB of RAM, really ASUS? I am almost certain almost all customers would’ve been just fine with keeping the old 5MP sensor in exchange for a RAM bump. 2GB is the standard for most new devices, particularly those sporting a 1080p display of any size.
ASUS is my personal favorite Android tab manufacturer, despite that I’m having a hard time figuring out why they decided to release this only a few months after the original came out? While the LTE is certainly nice, if you’re into paying the exorbitant data fees that come along with the privilege. Would anybody bother upgrading from their original Memo Pad to the newer model? Perhaps ASUS has been able to lower their manufacturing costs for the original MeMo and they want an excuse to cut the price.
