Last month, when Google introduced us to the brand new Nexus 7. Which we’ve reviewed and is currently the best tablet money can buy. Google told us we’d have a WiFi only version along with an LTE version. Well the WiFi only version has been available for a while. In fact, I have one right next to me. The LTE version is said to be unlocked so that one version will work on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon’s LTE. So if you choose Verizon and don’t like it, you can quickly change to AT&T or T-Mobile and not have to buy a new Nexus 7. Sounds great, right?
The only thing is, we have no idea when it’s coming to store shelves. Today, a press release went out, which was snagged by Japan’s Ameblo, that he tablet would support four different carriers, just like the US version. Except Google didn’t say that Sprint would be supporting the new Nexus 7. Maybe they left out Sprint because they have the smallest LTE footprint of all the carriers? Anyway, the press release said that the new Nexus 7 with LTE would be hitting Japan in mid-September, which is just a few weeks away. So could we be seeing the Nexus 7 LTE hit the US at the same time?
The LTE Nexus 7 is going to be a bit more expensive than the WiFi version, as expected. I believe it’s $349 for the 32GB version, the LTE version won’t be available in 16GB. Which isn’t a big deal, more storage is always better. We’re going to keep our eyes out for a release date for the US LTE model. Hopefully it won’t be too much further down the road. As I’d love to have an LTE version of the Nexus 7 on T-Mobile. Then I wouldn’t need a phone, with Google Voice still around….for now.
We’ll keep our fingers crossed that the LTE version launches soon. In the meantime, we’ll keep our eyes open for all Nexus rumors. As it is almost fall, Nexus season is about to kick into high gear, so lets have some fun.
