When it comes to T-Mobile, lots of things have been happening as of late. The last two years have been quite a change for subscribers of the carrier as well as for employees, as they have been through two CEO’s with the second being Jong Legere, who has changed the game for not only T-Mobile, but for the entire wireless industry. At least in the U.S. All this attention that T-Mobile has been getting just might be what is drawing DISH Network CEO Charles Ergen to make a potential bid for the wireless carrier next year, despite his previous statement in August that
“a bid for T-Mobile may be a challenge we wouldn’t feel comfortable taking on.”
News of this rumored bid for the buyout comes courtesy of Reuters, and what’s intriguing is the fact that Ergin is reportedly making plays to solidify the takeover of T-Mobile, only after having lost out to Japanese telecom giant Softbank for the buyout of Sprint and Clearwire, who now owns 78% of the 3rd largest wireless carriers stock. There are of course rumors that Sprint is in the running to snatch up T-Mobile next year as well, so DISH’s Ergin may end up losing out once again in his goal to own a wireless company.
Although the buyout of T-Mobile by Sprint is also just a rumor, it would be quite interesting to have a merging of the two companies. With T-Mobile’s continued growing success due to game changing ideas like offering phones off contract without subsidized prices, and plans that require no contract at all, it makes sense that both DISH and Sprint should be looking their way. We’ve certainly had our eye on T-Mobile through all these changes ourselves, but then again who wouldn’t with all the noise they have been making. If a Sprint/T-Mobile merger were to happen, it may not be as monumental as some would either hope for or think. Since the Government has already blocked one acquisition between two major U.S. carriers in the At&t/T-Mobile deal in 2012, it’s unlikely that they would lean the other way this time around, making the buyout by DISH, the more obvious scenario. 2014 is only a few short weeks away, so keep your browsers tuned to Android Headlines as we’ll be sure to update you on any information about what happens with Big Magenta.
