While some people like to obsess over screen sizes or processor speeds, just as many are more concerned about the battery when deciding on which phone to purchase. There’s good reason for this too, as all of those fancy specifications don’t mean much if your phone’s battery struggles with keeping a charge for any significant amount of time. Details about the OnePlus One have been trickling out ever since the phone was first revealed, and today it’s time to find out about the battery the phone will utilize.
In a post to his company’s forums, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau explains that the One will feature a non-removable 3,100mAh battery. In that message, Lau says the battery “was another big decision for us,” and that OnePlus wanted the battery to be able to last for a full day under normal use – meaning he doesn’t want users to have to turn down their screen brightness or disable Bluetooth to keep their phone up and running. This is why the One will be outfitted with a 3,100mAh battery, which is a little more beefier than the batteries we see in some other phones.
So, why a non-removable battery when phone aficionados seem to prefer removable ones? Lau says it’s because rolling with a removable battery would require OnePlus to make a compromise in one of two different areas. Either they’d need to ditch the idea of a slim, easy to hold phone by adding additional circuits and a protective layer to motherboard in order to accommodate the removable pack, or they’d need to use a smaller battery (specifically, 2,500mAh). Since OnePlus wanted to do neither of those things, the decision to include a non-removable battery was made.
The phone, which features a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.3GHz and an off-contract price tag that comes in somewhere under $500, is notable among Android users because it will be running CyanogenMod out of the box. Lau said in his post that OnePlus has been working alongside CyanogenMod through every step of the One’s development, so the battery will be optimized to be “as long lasting and efficient as possible.” There are still many details about the OnePlus One that have yet to see the light of day, so stay tuned for more.
