The word “phablet” was coined when smartphones came out that were drastically bigger than the average smartphone. Though they were bigger than a smartphone, they were just under the size of the smallest tablet. This is what we have come to know as the definition of a “phablet”. However, Samsung is taking their own approach to that idea with the Samsung Galaxy W.
It may be said that there was another device that Samsung released that was breaking “phablet” logic with a display size of 6.3-inches-the Samsung Mega 6.3. The Mega 6.3 was released almost exactly a year ago, but this new device is proving to be even more edgy. This won’t be the first of its size, the Samsung Galaxy W coming in at 7-inches, but it may be more comfortable to hold in one hand. Its size is only comparable to the 7-inch Fonepad by Asus, or the HP 7-inch Voice Tab.
The Samsung Galaxy W could essentially be called a tablet with calling capabilities, or at least a truer definition of the word “phablet”. The specs of the device show a 720p display, 8MP rear camera and 2MP front facing camera. Inside there is a 1.2GHz quad-core processor and 16GB of expandable storage. The software the device will be launching with is Android 4.3, which is starting it out a bit behind since Android 4.4 is available. However, there will be software staples that we have come to love on our Samsung devices. Multi-window, split screen and pop up play will all be available for the Galaxy W. As well as LTE-A support in the device and a 3200 mAh battery. Outside, the Galaxy W will have that faux leather backing with the classic stitching around the edges. The only issue with a device this size, is it is very market specific.
The Samsung Galaxy W will launch in South Korea with a 499,400 won price point-that translates to about $489 USD. Which seems to be fair pricing for a device this big in the US, problem is, we may never see it here. There has been no word on a US release date, but that may change if this device follows in the footsteps of its predecessor.
The first Samsung Galaxy W was released in 2011, however that variant took a different approach. The first Galaxy W was actually smaller than Samsung’s flagship device of that year-the Samsung Galaxy S II. When it came to the US, it was released on T-Mobile and was known as the Samsung Exhibit II 4G. Though the new variant of the Galaxy W family is way larger and may not be as well received in the US. So they may skip a US launch altogether.
