Sony have never been the best at keeping their upcoming smartphones a secret, and the Xperia Z3 has seen its fair share of leaks as well. With Sony’s IFA press conference just days away, it’s not surprising that the device is pretty much finalized and it’s even less surprising that more info on the Xperia Z3’s specs have leaked out just days before we see an official announcement. It seems that the Xperia Z3 is to be one more refinemet of the Xperia Z line, with the specs getting a small boost and the overall device getting slimmed down some as well.
Under-the-hood, we’re apparently looking at a 2.5 Ghz Snapdragon 801, as oppose to the 2.3 Ghz Snapdragon 801 at the heart of the Z2 (for those chipset fans, it’s supposedly the MSM8974AC being used here) and the same 3GB of RAM is listed once more. Talking about gigabytes, the Z3 is tipped to feature 16GB of expandable storage, much like, the Z2 did. The tipster details a 20-megapixel sensor on the Z3 capable of recording 4K video at ISO up to 3,200 and taking stills up to 12,800, which again sounds a lot like the Xperia Z2, but the camera found in the Xperia line of devices has been praised by a lot of people over the past couple of years, still we’re sure Sony has done something with it. The same IP55 and IP58 ratings are here, but this time it looks like Sony have improved things to allow the device to be submerged even further.
One of the biggest complaints about the Xperia Z2 was the physical size of the device, coming in quite a bit larger than other 5.2-inch packing devices. This time around, it looks like Sony has trimmed the fat a little bit, with the Z2’s measurements measuring 146.8 x 73.3 x 8.2 mm and the Xperia Z3’s tentatively listed as 146.5 x 72.4 x 7.5 mm. The same 5.2-inch 1080p IPS display is said to be used here, so it is nice to see Sony trimming things down, but it would have been nice to see even more work done on those measurements. Still, the Japanese company has apparently managed to squeeze in a 3,100 mAh battery as well here, so we can’t complain too much. Talking more about that display, the spec sheet from the back of the demo device lists a whopping 600 nits brightness this time around, making this one of the brightest displays on the market.
We were of course expecting a little more from Sony, but their autumn flagships are often more of a refresh, with 2015 looking like the year of a big change for Sony. As always, there’s a good chance that these specs are from an earlier device or just wishful thinking, but we don’t have too much longer to find out, with Sony’s press conference just days away.
