Chrome Beta Receives Update Fixing Custom ROM 'Floating Window' Bug: APK Included

Google services are rather reliable. Being as big as Google are you can expect their new apps, features and the rest will generally be in a perfect order by the time they reach you. That even goes for their beta stuff. For instance, Google has their Chrome App for android and they also have their Chrome Beta app for android. Both are essentially the same although as the name suggests, Chrome Beta is more of an experimental variant. This means you can get to experience all the latest features quicker. Not to mention those Google might not include in their ‘normal’ Chrome. Google do note on the Play listing that some features might be “a little rough around the edges”. However, as this is Google and as mentioned, there is hardly ever an issue with their beta features.

Although, if you are running a custom ROM then you might disagree with that. Since the last update to Chrome beta, a number of custom ROM users have experienced an extremely annoying bug. One that effectively renders the app useless. The bug resulted in Chrome appearing as a floating window. This was not intentional. No, this was not a feature designed to work with Paranoid Android’s ‘Halo’ or CyanogenMod’s ‘Heads Up’. Instead, this was plain and simply a bug. In reality this was not really Google’s problem. Firstly, the app is a beta product and so the disclaimer is there. Secondly, as this was only a notable bug on custom ROMs, it could be argued the onus to fix was on the ROM developers and not Google.

That said, Google being Google have gone and released an update to Chrome Beta that will fix the bug on custom ROMs. It is worth noting that this seems to be the same version as the previous Chrome Beta and as such won’t contain any additional features. There probably is a few other minor bug fixes, but nothing to warrant installing the updated app if you are not experiencing the current bug. If you are though, then you will want the update. This is not currently available on the Play Store, but we have mirrored the APK for you. Click here to get the mirrored version. This is a signed APK by Google and as such there are no problems or security issues with downloading and installing. Have you been experiencing the problem? Let us know how you get on after the fix.
