Rumor: HTC Planning To Release VR Headset With A Possible March Release Date

The smartphone giant from Taiwan, HTC, is allegedly planning to launch a virtual reality headset in March. According to a new rumor, the headset will be priced at US $300. With HTC gearing up to release its next flagship phone at the MWC 2015, the One M9, which is one of the most anticipated phone of the year, this rumor gives us hope that we might see a lot more coming from HTC at this year’s event. HTC had announced its entry into smart home and IoT (Internet of Things) related devices, as well as the entertainment sector, during the CES 2015 held in January. If this rumor is true, the aforementioned VR headset will be the first step HTC takes in this direction. Needless to say, it will be a bold move but could also be a potentially rewarding one too.

Virtual Reality is one of the most promising fields in modern day technology. Basically, it aims to make the user a greater part of the UI, so as to make the whole process of interacting with a program (usually a game or video), by generating a three-dimensional environment, and allowing the user to interact with it in such a way that it feels real. A VR headset, like the one HTC is allegedly making, is a head-mounted display, that projects the generated three-dimension environment in front of the user’s eyes. One example of such a device is the Samsung Gear VR which hit the market towards the end of last year. HTCs VR headset, if launched, will pit it in direct competition against the Gear VR.

HTC is also allegedly interested in developing video watching solutions for the rumored VR headset. This product might be showcased at the MWC 2015. Although, there hasn’t been any official confirmation or any other leak about this VR headset, so it is unclear if it will make an appearance at MWC alongside the HTC One M9. Do you think that HTC will actually launch a VR headset device at the MWC? Let us know in the comments.
