Google’s Advanced Technology And Projects division, or perhaps better known as ATAP, has plenty of things under their belt, a couple of which are fairly big and imaginative projects like the spotlight stories which are basically digital shorts you can view on your phone (assuming it’s compatible of course) and the Project Ara modular smartphone, which is poised to shift the landscape of smartphones by letting consumers essentially build the device they want by selecting a personalized combination of the components they’re looking for. What ATAP is not known for is wearables, but according to the description of their Google I/O session that is all about to change.
The short chunk of text which discusses what will be talked about this Summer during their session states they have wearables which they “hope will blow your socks off.” This is followed up with a statement that they mean blow your socks off a tad bit more literal than we might think, so one could only imagine what these wearables are or how we’ll interact with them. Suggestions are already speculating it could have something to do with footwear and that is a fair assumption given the claim of literalness by the ATAP team.
ATAP says their goal for wearables is to break the tension between shrinking screen sizes and the ability to have rich interactions with the devices that carry them. Does this mean their wearables won’t have screens? Connect to devices that do for interface interaction? Who knows at this point, but according to ATAP it will be something amazing and might just be something that most would deem seemingly impossible to create. The details are pretty scarce, and that is obviously the goal as ATAP wants to keep the big reveal under wraps until the time comes. The great thing about this session is that if you can’t attend the event, it will be live streamed so you’ll still get to see things as they happen like you were there. Whatever ATAP has cooked up, it likely incorporates every aspect of the title of their session and blends together the elements of something really awesome yet still elegant and beautiful.
