2015 Moto E Android 5.1.1 Source Kernels Now Up

Motorola has given developers another set of code to work with today with the posting of the open source kernel files for the 2015 Motorola Moto E. While this doesn’t really have much to do with the end users directly, in the long run it can potentially mean better stuff for those users. With this open source kernel code now available developers can use it to create ROMs, improve apps, and do other things pertaining to the software which can help improve the user experience. It’s also worth noting that this is the open source kernel for Android 5.1.1 which Motorola updated the 2015 Moto E too just a few months back.

Developers can grab the source kernels in either zip file format, tar.gz file format or both, and then use it as they will for creating whatever it is they may have intended for use with it. As we said there is nothing really exciting here for end users, but this does display Motorola’s continued commitment to make available the software in its entirety to the public as well as developers.  If you’re a developer and are interested in grabbing the open source kernel files for the 2015 Moto E you can do so by heading over to the github page for them.

Motorola’s official event last week came with the announcement of three new phones which includes the Moto X Pure Edition, the Moto X Play, and the 3rd Gen Moto G, all of which Motorola will hopefully release respective open source kernels for some time down the line. Since only the new Moto G has been made available for purchase, it’s anyone’s guess as to when that will be.
