Samsung Galaxy S7 announcement will quite probably be the first major Android flagship launch next year. The device is expected to sport the Korean company’s most powerful processor of the Exynos line (at least one model) and we have been getting some leaked information regarding both the handset and its cores. The chip in question is the Exynos 8890, codenamed M1, and sources in China gave us hints at the possible specs we should expect. A recent post on Weibo revealed some interesting benchmark results from Geekbench3, so, let’s check out these numbers.
The Exynos 8890 running at its maximum speed of 2.4 GHz scored 2304 points on the single-threaded test while the multi-thread resulted in 8038 points. For the sake of comparison, the Exynos 7420 which you see on Samsung’s latest flagships including the Galaxy Note 5, running at 2.1 GHz scored 1431 points for the single-thread and 4717 for the multi-thread – this is a 60% increase for the single-core and a 70% jump over the multi-core performances.
Samsung is reportedly already testing the Galaxy S7 for next year’s launch and the company is in talks with Qualcomm to release a version of its flagship device also running the Snapdragon 820 SoC. Samsung was one of the biggest customers from the American chipmaker though they have ultimately decided to dump the Snapdragon series in favor of their own Exynos 7420 processor, blaming overheating and performance issues. According to recent reports, the Korean giant has received tweaked Snapdragon 820 chips from Qualcomm, so we may see 2 versions of the phone next year. If you don’t remember, the Galaxy Note 4 was offered in two variants – one with a quad-core Snapdragon 805 sold in North America, Western Europe, China and Japan, and an octa-core Exynos 5433 shipped to remaining markets. As such, there may be a similar arrangement.
It is still too early to say other specs, but rumors suggest that the handset will come packed with 3 or 4GB of RAM and a 20-megapixel ISOCELL camera from Samsung. As for screen sizes, previous leaks say the company will launch the Galaxy S7 in two variants with displays measuring 5.2 and 5.7 inches. Nevertheless, there’s a long way until Spring and until then we can expect a lot of leaks, so stay tuned for more news.
