Google is attacking a significant issue on mobile devices with a new app that it’s launching today on Android and iOS called ‘Spaces,’ which is all about group sharing. While not always the case, sharing things with groups of friends or even chatting with a group of friends can be a little more challenging than you might think. Sometimes the challenge lies in getting everyone to use the same application, and once that’s done you’re typically moving between apps to copy, paste, and share content with everyone from GIF images to YouTube videos to articles to webpages. Moving back and forth between apps takes more time than you might have, which is why Google created this new app.
Spaces, according to Google, is rolling out today on both Android and iOS platforms as well as on the mobile web and on desktop (although the app does not appear to be live anywhere just yet), and it makes sharing things with groups rather simple for the sheer fact that Google Search, YouTube, and Chrome are all baked into the app. Users can find what they’re looking for right inside of Spaces and then share it with a specific group. A space can be created about virtually any topic, and the Space creator can invite anyone that they want to be able to participate with just a tap.
Each space looks and sort of act like a large message board or forums where you can share anything that you can find, and any content can be discussed by other users in that particular space just like with a chat app. Content is also searchable, meaning that if you share something to a space from a few weeks back, another user could search for it right in that space and find it within seconds so they don’t have to spend ten to fifteen minutes scrolling. Spaces also notifies you when people start talking or discussing things that have been shared and you can see the conversation from the beginning so you’re up to speed. Although the app is not yet live, it should be sometime later today, and Google also states that they will be demonstrating during Google I/O this week with a dedicated space for each session that happens during the conference.
