The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is expected to be announced in August this year – similar to what Samsung did last year with the Galaxy Note 5. Now that we’re just a few months out from the unveiling, there’s plenty of leaks popping up. Just yesterday, another leak showed that the next Galaxy Note would be the Galaxy Note 7. There was also a leak about the Galaxy Note 7 launching with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, as opposed to Android N. Now there’s a leaked screenshot floating around depicting that the device is going to be featuring an Iris Scanner. This rumor isn’t really new. It pops up whenever a new Galaxy launch is near. However, Samsung did recently launch a tablet with an Iris scanner, making it a bit more believable this time around.
The screenshot in reference here is shown above. It appears to be running on SK Telecom (a South Korean wireless carrier, which is also the home country of Samsung), and as such most of the text is in Korean. Making it tough to decipher what the screen is showing. However the source did say that this is showing the iris feature in settings. This appears to be the screen where the Galaxy Note 7 would ask if you want to use the iris scanner or fingerprint scanner to unlock the device.
As always, this needs to be taken with a grain of salt until Samsung officially announces the Galaxy Note 7. As this screenshot can be easily faked, and we’ve see that happen before. Additionally, smartphone manufacturers do make plenty of prototypes before they settle on the final version that will be sold to customers. Which makes it possible that Samsung is working on a prototype with an iris scanner inside, but that may not be the Galaxy Note 7 that DJ Koh may show off at Unpacked in August.
Also important to note that there was a Zauba import listing showing 200 units of iris scanners imported by Samsung from South Korea to India, likely for R&D testing. Showing that Samsung is definitely working on using an iris scanner in an upcoming product. What exactly that product might be, is still up in the air.
