Kia Brings Android Auto to More Vehicles via Software Update

Kia had already made Android Auto available on a few of their vehicles, thanks to a software update. Today, they announced via a press release that they are expanding their lineup of Android Auto compatible vehicles. In addition to that, these new vehicles will also get Apple CarPlay support in the update, for those that may use an iPhone as well as Android. The vehicles that are now eligible for software updates that bring Android Auto and Apple CarPlay include the 2017 Kia Forte, 2015 & 2016 Kia Optima, 2015 & 2016 Kia Optima Hybrid, 2015 & 2016 Kia Sedona, 2014-16 Kia Soul, 2015 & 2016 Kia Soul EV, 2016 Kia Sorento and the 2017 Kia Sportage.

This is an update to their UVO platform, which houses all of their infotainment options. The update is only available on those models above that have a navigation system built-in. Others are out of luck. Kia notes in their press release that customers will be notified by the end of this month to go ahead and check their vehicle’s eligibility and will also be given step-by-step instructions for updating the software on UVO3. Just a friendly reminder that all owners need to register through the myuvo.com website to be notified about this update. That applies to both new and used vehicle owners.

It’s great that Kia has gone the route here of allowing drivers to update the software themselves. As other car makers have forced their customers to go to their local dealership to get the update done – while free, many don’t have time to spend around an hour at the dealership getting the update. Android Auto is a great addition to Kia’s vehicles. With their sister-brand, Hyundai, being a launch partner for Android Auto last year, it’s not surprising to see Kia bringing Android Auto to more and more cars in their fleet. Android Auto allows users to plug in their smartphone and bring the Android interface to the display in their vehicle. This means that they can play music from their phone, whether it be stored locally, or streaming from the likes of Spotify, Google Play Music, or other services. Additionally, Google Maps can be used for navigation through Android Auto.
