The US startup Magic Leap has been developing an augmented reality (AR) head-mounted retinal display for six years now. Given that rather long development period, it’s incredible how little we still know about the product itself. Namely, the Florida-based firm only made its project public back in 2014, but apart from a single patent leak and a report that the company will begin production by the end of this year, that’s all we know about this “mixed reality” headset. Given how Magic Leap already raised well over half a billion dollars for its headset, it’s impressive how mysterious the entire project remains.
Well, that could all soon change, as the latest job posting from the Florida-based company suggests that its creation will be hitting the streets in the near future. The said listing was published on GlassDoor and explains how the firm’s mixed reality headset requires more data from various environments to properly function. Because of that need, Magic Leap is looking for a Field Engineer who would use its device and other high precision equipment to record user behavior in various environments and home settings. Apart from that, the only other information disclosed by the posting is that the company’s new Field Engineer would be based in Magic Leap’s headquarters in Plantation, Florida, and record nearby environments. In other words, residents of Florida may soon see how the company’s mysterious headset actually looks like.
Furthermore, as the listing states ideal applicants will have at least some experience with Linux and its command line tools, it’s likely that the mentioned high precision devices are running some version of this open source operating system. Of course, it’s possible that the equipment this listing refers to doesn’t include Magic Leap’s mysterious headset, but rather some other devices which record environments in a similar way to the company’s upcoming AR head-mounted display. Not surprisingly, Magic Leap’s spokespeople declined to comment on this listing in any shape or form. However, we should know more soon because while Magic Leap already confirmed that it won’t unveil its product during CES in January, the Florida-based firm has long been rumored to be commercializing its headset in 2017. So, if that’s truly the plan, it can’t be long before Magic Leap finally reveals the mysterious headset it’s been working on for the better part of the last decade.
