Omate announced a new smartwatch at MWC 2017 this week, and it’s yet another feather in Qualcomm’s cap when it comes to their new Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor – a chipset that is customized specifically for wearables. This isn’t an Android Wear smartwatch, but a smartwatch that you can actually make video calls with. It has a front-facing camera which you can use to make video calls. Now this also means you’ll need to hold your wrist up a bit to actually allow people to see you, but it is a rather neat concept. It is a connected smartwatch and it does support 4G LTE. So you’ll be able to toss your SIM card inside the smartwatch and have connectivity virtually everywhere you go.
As mentioned already, the Omate O4VC does run on the Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor, a chipset that runs a slew of other smartwatches on the market right now. It also has 4GB of storage and 512MB of RAM available. There is a 1.3-inch square-shaped display – compared to the many 1.3-inch circular displays you see on smartwatches these day. This display does also have a resolution of 240×240. So it’s not as high-resolution as some of the others on the market, but still pretty good. It does also have support for Bluetooth 4.1 LE, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, GPS as well as 4G LTE, as we mentioned already. There is a 600mAh battery inside the O4VC smartwatch, which Omate says should last around three days before needing a recharge. Finally, the Omate O4VC is also rated at IP67 for water-resistance and dust-resistance.
Like most smartwatches, the Omate O4VC does use a 20mm watch strap which means you’ll be able to swap it out for another one, in case you don’t like the one that comes with it. There are a few cases available for the watch casing on the O4VC, which make it a bit more kid-friendly – seeing as kids obviously won’t be that gentle with their smartwatch. This is actually aimed at kids, as parents will be able to keep track of their little ones and also video call them basically whenever they want.
