Samsung Discreetly Brought New OLED And VR Tech At MWC 2017

Samsung Electronics attended Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona last month where the company’s main focus was the unveiling of its latest Galaxy Tab S3 tablet. However, recent reports claim that Samsung Electronics showcased a few interesting new technologies behind closed doors, including a force touch display, a VR (virtual reality) headset boasting a panel with a pixel density of 1,200 pixels per inch, an OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display without a polarizer, and even a blue-less OLED panel designed for people who are colorblind.

The Korea Herald is now citing an unnamed source who reportedly attended the private exhibition and confirmed that Samsung is working on force touch display technology. However, while there have been rumors suggesting that the Galaxy S8 will have a force touch display, the source adds that the product doesn’t seem to be ready for the consumer market just yet. Another product reportedly showcased by Samsung Electronics was an OLED display that lacks a polarizer. The end result would be a much brighter OLED panel whose power requirements would be lower than those of conventional OLED displays. The company also showcased a blue-less OLED display for people suffering from color blindness, although details on how the panel would account for different types of color blindness are lacking.

Last but not least, it’s safe to assume that Samsung Electronics is working on improving the concept of mobile VR, and to this end, the company has apparently been working on a new VR headset boasting a panel with a pixel density of 1,200 pixels per inch. In practice, a higher pixel density can lead to a much crisper image, and in virtual reality, a higher pixel count can eliminate the so-called screen door effect where users are able to distinguish between different pixels in a grid. However, the aforementioned HMD (head-mounted-display) is apparently just one small step in the race for higher pixel count in the VR market, as the source claims that another VR headset boasting a panel with an even higher pixel density of 1,500PPI should be unveiled soon. Provided the report is accurate, more information on the products outlined above might be available in the near future.
