Samsung and Under Armour announced their collaboration earlier this year at Mobile World Congress 2017 in an attempt to widen the availability of Under Armour applications on the South Korean tech giant’s ‘Gear’ wearables. Today this partnership starts bearing fruit for Samsung Gear S3 owners, as Under Armour’s Connect Fitness application suite is now supported on the aforementioned smartwatch. The suite includes UA Record, MapMyRun, Endomondo, and MyFitnessPal. Additionally, Samsung is introducing new apps and app updates to its latest smartwatch, including Spotify, the BMW Connected app, as well as HERE WeGo and NYC Transit.
Under Armour’s UA Record is the world’s first 24/7 connected fitness and health network, and Samsung Gear S3 owners can now have access to the platform directly from their wrists. Meanwhile, MapMyRun will track physical exercises and the social fitness app Endomondo will offer personal training tips. Samsung claims that each application includes unique features available exclusively to Samsung Gear devices. This includes the option to add calories and log water consumption within the MyFitnessPal application, which hosts the largest nutritional database in the world. To make things more appealing to prospective customers, Samsung announced that each new Gear S3 purchase will now be paired with 12 months of free access to the premium features of each aforementioned application.
The company also announced a number of additional apps and updates for existing applications on the Samsung Gear S3, including Spotify, which currently allow users to stream music directly through the smartwatch over an LTE or Wi-Fi network. The Spotify app on the Samsung Gear S3 will support offline caching starting April, allowing Spotify Premium users to access local playlists even when they are not connected to the Internet. Another application now supported by the Samsung Gear S3 is BMW Connected, giving BMW drivers the ability to lock and unlock doors, as well as check fuel status and more, directly from their wrist. Gear for Nest also makes its way on the Samsung Gear S3, connecting the wearable with Nest Learning Thermostats and giving customers the option to set their home’s temperature remotely using the smartwatch’s rotating bezel. Lastly, HERE WeGo will offer turn-by-turn navigation and real-time public transportation updates on the smartwatch, whereas NYC Transit will give New York residents an intuitive road map for navigating the city’s public transport system.
