The Huawei Watch 2 was announced at Mobile World Congress back in February, and despite the original Watch launching in Canada (and many other countries), the company currently has “no plans to launch the Watch 2” in Canada. That’s unfortunate for those in Canada that were wanting to get their hands on the brand new smartwatch from Huawei which also runs on the latest version of Android Wear, but it does leave the door open for Huawei to change their mind down the road. Previously, customers in Canada were able to buy the Huawei Watch from the Google Store, but that’s no longer an option, and there’s a “waitlist” for the LG Watch Style, giving Canadians very little choice when it comes to Android Wear 2.0 smartwatches right now.
Huawei Watch 2 was seen as a bit of a downgrade from the original Huawei Watch, largely because it’s a bigger smartwatch with a larger bezel. It does run on Android Wear 2.0, which includes Android Pay, Google Assistant and much more, which is a big deal. But it still hasn’t been as popular as the original smartwatch, at least not yet. However the original Huawei Watch won’t be getting Android Pay support (even though there was a report going around that stated that the watch had NFC inside, it actually doesn’t), so that is a reason to buy the new Huawei Watch 2 instead. But for Canadians, there’s very little available for smartwatches. You’re only other choice for Android is the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier (not even the Classic), with the LG Watch Style coming “later this year”.
It’s unfortunate that the Huawei Watch 2 is having a somewhat of a botched launch this year, considering the original Huawei Watch launched pretty quickly and became a best seller almost instantly. Hopefully Huawei can get things straightened out, as there are likely a good number of people in Canada that would love to get their hands on the latest smartwatch from Huawei. Heck, they likely are wanting to just get their hands on an Android Wear 2.0 smartwatch, since there have been zero of them to launch in the country so far.
