Verizon Unlimited Comes to Prepaid with 480p Video Streaming

Verizon debuted their new Unlimited plan earlier this year, much to the surprise of basically everyone. They began offering an unlimited data plan for just $90/month and it would be as low as $40 if you had a family of four (which is $160/month). Now the company is bringing their unlimited data plan to the prepaid side of things. It’s cheaper, but there are a couple of caveats here. The prepaid version of Verizon Unlimited comes in at $80/month, and since this is prepaid, that includes all your taxes and fees.

With prepaid you will be getting unlimited “high speed” data, but you will be getting throttled video streaming too, throttled down to 480p. Which is basically DVD quality, and it’s something that T-Mobile did first, and Verizon poked fun at them for doing so. Verizon does note in the fine print on this plan that they may throttle you for network congestion. Seeing as towers give postpaid customers priority ahead of prepaid and MVNO, you’re more likely to be throttled than if you were on a postpaid plan. Otherwise, it’s business as usual. Unlike AT&T’s Unlimited Choice plan, you aren’t being throttled to 3Mbps, which is a good thing. You do also get unlimited talk and text to and from Mexico and Canada, like on the other prepaid plans which is nice. And obviously, Carry Over Data and Always On Data are not applicable on this new unlimited plan.

This new plan is a pretty good choice for those that are on a prepaid plan and don’t want to make the move to postpaid. It means that you can get unlimited for just $80/month on Verizon, which for many, still provides the best experience out of the four carriers. The caveats here on this plan aren’t bad at all, basically keeping you from streaming in HD video. There’s also no mention of tethering on this plan, which likely means it’s not included. Something that AT&T also took out of their cheaper Unlimited Choice plan. This is the new way that carriers are changing up their unlimited plans to give customers more options.
