Verizon Wireless started pushing out the May Android Security Update to Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge units on its network, as evidenced by the wireless carrier’s support pages for both devices. The largest mobile service provider in the United States introduced the latest set of patches for Samsung’s 2014 phablets in a relatively timely manner as the same software package only started hitting unlocked devices in select European countries earlier this week. The swift release of the new Android Security Update for the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge seemingly follows Samsung’s recent promise to U.S. consumers, with the South Korean consumer electronics manufacturer vowing to keep the unlocked variants of its devices in the country updated on a monthly basis going forward. The promise that was made in March didn’t include carrier-locked smartphones, but the Big Red is apparently adamant to not lag behind Samsung a lot and keep its customers as protected as possible.
The May security patch for the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge is being distributed as an over-the-air (OTA) update that is rolling out in stages and might take several days before it’s available to Verizon’s customers throughout the country. Samsung’s devices are scanning for the update periodically and will prompt their users to download the security patch through a push notification once the new software is available for installation. Users who are keen to download the update as soon as possible can search for it manually by launching the Android Settings app, navigating to the “About phone” menu, and tapping the “Download software updates” on the following interface.
Verizon’s Galaxy Note 4 is receiving the software version N910VVRS2CQD1, while the Galaxy Note Edge is being updated with the build number N915VVRS2CQE1, the company’s official support pages reveal. Apart from fixes for a number of security vulnerabilities, the update also eliminates several bugs and ships with a new version of the Amazon Shopping app, Verizon said. The software package won’t radically change the end user experience for Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge owners and is recommended to be installed over a Wi-Fi network, with the device being sufficiently charged or charging during the installation process.
