A Motorola Mobility-made device bearing the model number XT1797 was certified by the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) earlier this month, as evidenced by a number of documents published by the agency on Tuesday. According to the FCC’s description of the newly unveiled Moto device, the smartphone in question is powered by Qualcomm’s MSM8937 system-on-chip (SoC), better known as the Snapdragon 430. This piece of silicon has already been used by the Lenovo-owned consumer electronics manufacturer in the past as it was integrated into the Moto G5 that was introduced at Mobile World Congress (MWC) earlier this year. Given how the Chicago, Illinois-based phone maker is currently rumored to be working on a revision of this particular handset called the Moto G5S, it’s possible that one of its models is the newly certified XT1797.
The testing documentation published by the FCC also reveals that the XT1797 supports Bluetooth 4.2 and two SIM cards, though it’s currently unclear whether it only features a Hybrid SIM slot or a dedicated tray for a microSD card, something that all contemporary Moto-branded handsets are equipped with. Additionally, the device was running Android 7.1.1 Nougat at the time of its testing that was likely similar to stock Android, with the Lenovo-owned company traditionally releasing devices with only slightly modified software. Finally, the XT1797 is powered by a 3,000mAh battery with fast charging support and boasts a 5.5-inch screen, the FCC’s filing indicates. The Moto G5S was previously reported as having a somewhat smaller screen and only the Moto G5S Plus was said to be shipping with a 5.5-inch panel, so it remains to be seen whether the larger variant of the handset ends up being equipped with the Snapdragon 430 or if the Moto G5S debuts with a larger screen. The latter scenario is much likelier given how most industry insiders agree that the Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus will be more expensive than their predecessors, indicating that they will ship with improved hardware.
It’s currently unclear when Motorola is planning to release the XT1797 but the device should be available in the United States given how it was submitted to the FCC for certification. More details on the upcoming handset will likely be available later this year.
