Microsoft today announced that it is bringing an Edge browser app to Android and iOS. The company has yet to specifically note when the Android version of the app will go live but has stated that it will happen soon. However at present it will only be available to those who are part of the of the Windows 10 Insider Preview program – aka ‘Windows Insiders.’ So only these preview members will initially be able to download the beta version of Microsoft Edge on Android when it is first released.
As part of the announcement, Microsoft explains that the Android version of Edge will look to bring a familiar Edge browsing experience to those who own an Android device. Like for example the ability to finish off browsing the internet on a different device to the one you started with, whether it be from PC to Android, or the other way. Likewise, Edge on Android will come with all passwords and favorites synced, so for those who use Edge on Windows 10 as their main browser and often make use of stored passwords, the option to make use of those same stored passwords when using Edge on Android will be available. The same can be said for other Edge features, such as Reading List, New Tab Page and Reading View. While this marks a fairly big move on Microsoft’s behalf, this is only the latest measure the company has introduced in its bid to attract more Android device owners to its services, and follows on from a number of other Microsoft-related apps that have become available on Android in the past. In fact, today also saw the company rebranding its Arrow Launcher as Microsoft Launcher – another app which is currently available as a preview, although unlike Edge, one which is more widely available to Android device owners at the moment.
For those interested in being one of the first to gain access to the preview version of Microsoft Edge on Android, then Microsoft is still allowing Windows 10 users to sign up to the preview program. Signing up is simple a matter of registering a Microsoft account with the program and then downloading the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview version which according to Microsoft, will in turn allow Windows Insiders to download the Microsoft Edge Preview Android app – when it becomes available.
