Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi has announced that it will launch the Xiaomi Redmi 5 and the Redmi 5 Plus in Taiwan on January 25. The announcement was made on the company’s official Facebook page and this launch comes around a month after the device maker unveiled the two handsets in December 2017. Xiaomi has not provided any details regarding the pricing of the two smartphones once it is sold in Taiwan, although the tech company will likely provide more information in an upcoming event scheduled at 8:00PM on January 25.
Both the Xiaomi Redmi 5 and the Redmi 5 Plus sport an 18:9 display and significantly thinner bezels compared to its predecessors. The Redmi 5 is equipped with a 5.7-inch display with a resolution of 1440 by 720 pixels while the Redmi 5 Plus sports a larger 5.99-inch display with a resolution of 2160 by 1080 pixels. The Redmi 5 is powered by the Snapdragon 450 chipset, while it is available in two variants that contain either 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal flash storage or 3GB of RAM and 32GB of flash storage. This handset contains a 3,300mAh battery to keep its lights on, and it weighs 157 grams.
On the other hand, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus is powered by the Snapdragon 625 chipset, and on that chip comes the Adreno 506 GPU for graphics processing. The handset can be purchased in variants that contain either 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal flash storage or 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal flash storage. The Redmi 5 Plus includes a non-removable 4,000mAh battery to keep the lights on, and it weighs 179.5 grams. Both devices sport a single rear camera that is equipped with one 12-megapixel sensor, while the handsets’ front-facing shooter has a 5-megapixel snapper. Located directly below the rear shooter is the fingerprint sensor for quickly unlocking the device. Both smartphones can accept two SIM cards at the same time, and they are both shipping with Android 7.1.2 Nougat pre-installed. However, Xiaomi’s proprietary skin, MIUI 9, runs on top of Google’s operating system, as is the case for every other Xiaomi-branded smartphone, save for the Xiaomi Mi A1 which runs stock Android out of the box, as most of you probably already know.
