Samsung Galaxy S10 To "End" Display Notches: Insider

Samsung’s Galaxy S10 will innovate beyond fingerprint readers, known industry insider from China known only by their social media handle “Ice Universe” said earlier today, adding that the upcoming Android flagship “will end this design” in reference to notched displays. While vague on details, the source with a proven track record regarding Samsung product leaks clearly indicated the South Korean tech giant will once again be avoiding notches with the Galaxy S10 line, presumably in a bid to continue pushing its Infinity Displays, which is how it refers to Super AMOLED panels with an 18.5:9 aspect ratio.

The suggestion that Samsung may somehow “end” the trend of display notches is still somewhat dubious as it not only implies the company managed to find a way to continue slimming down smartphone bezels without opting for asymmetrical panels but that its technology will also be easy to copy, or at the very least license. OnePlus, ASUS, and a number of other Android handset manufacturers recently suggested screen cutouts aren’t going away anytime soon as truly bezel-less displays are still just an ambition and won’t be a commercial reality in the immediate future.

Previous reports indicated Samsung is toying with the idea of equipping at least one member of the Galaxy S10 family with a 3D camera capable of powering depth-sensing applications, similar to the front sensor array found on the Xiaomi Mi 8 and Apple’s iPhone X. While both of those devices had to embrace screen cutouts in order to accommodate such imaging systems, Samsung is said to have possibly identified a solution for delivering a notchless 3D camera, having found it in the technology developed by Israeli startup Mantis Vision that it previously backed financially. Other older rumors indicate the Galaxy S10 Plus will offer a triple-camera setup on the back, hence being similar to the P20 Pro flagship Huawei introduced earlier this year. The Galaxy S10 lineup is rumored to consist of three models and is likely to be announced in early 2019, possibly at the next edition of Barcelona-based MWC.
