A recently spotted benchmark result suggests that a new smartphone from Google, tentatively called the Google Pixel 3a XL, will feature the Snapdragon 710 chipset and sport 4GB of RAM. The processor incorporated into the handset indicates that this is a mid-ranger with decent performance across the board. Furthermore, according to Geekbench, this is the rumored Bonito handset that’s been in the works for some time now. The last piece of information that Geekbench revealed is the phone’s pre-installed operating system, we’re looking at Android 9 Pie here, as expected.
Multiple rumors already suggested the presence of a Google device with the code name Bonito, with leaks appearing as early as June last year. The codename of the device also appeared on the database of the Android Open Source Project within the same month. This recent benchmark result corroborates with earlier reports which hint that the “Bonito” smartphone will feature the Snapdragon 710 chipset. This processor also includes a dedicated artificial intelligence engine that offers twice better AI performance than the Snapdragon 660 SoC.
This device is not the first mid-range smartphone from Google that will reportedly sport the Snapdragon 710. Another Geekbench entry shows a device identified as the Google Pixel 3 Lite XL sporting the same chipset but with 6GB of RAM. Given that the popular benchmark application identifies the newly sighted device as the Pixel 3a XL, it is possible that this handset will be a cheaper hardware variant of Google’s upcoming larger mid-range smartphone offering.
Numerous leaks already supplied details about the design of the Pixel 3 Lite XL. According to a recent rumor, the device will feature a 6-inch display with a Full HD+ resolution and an aspect ratio of 18.5:9. It also sports a more traditional bezel above the screen, which will house the front-facing camera, earpiece, and sensors. Meanwhile, the back of the smartphone will reportedly include a single rear camera and a fingerprint scanner, and recent reports claim that the cheaper Pixel smartphones will feature a metal and polycarbonate construction.
The front-facing camera will sport an 8-megapixel imaging module, according to recent rumors, while the rear shooter will come with a 12-megapixel sensor. Recent leaks also claim the Pixel 3 Lite XL will feature 32GB of internal storage, and given Google’s track record with its devices, it is likely that the handset will not support internal flash storage expansion. On the other hand, the smaller of the two upcoming mid-range smartphone offerings from Google, the Pixel 3 XL, will also feature the same design as the larger handset, although it comes with 4GB of RAM and the Snapdragon 670 chipset.
The presence of another Pixel 3 Lite XL device with smaller RAM capacity suggests that Google may launch multiple hardware variants of its upcoming mid-range smartphone offering, and recent reports claim that the search giant will announce the new handsets this Spring. These models of the Pixel 3 Lite XL may cater to different price brackets, with the newly sighted device shipping with a lower price tag compared to the unit with 6GB of RAM. Nonetheless, the chipset included with the smartphone indicates that the product will be priced at around $400.
