Samsung has two new smartwatches to unveil next month – Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. Over the past few weeks, there has been a massive onslaught of leaks that have revealed most of the key specs, features, and design of the upcoming wearables. A fresh leak has now detailed their storage capacity and it appears we are in for a big upgrade.
According to a SamMobilereport, the Galaxy Watch 4 series will have 16GB of built-in storage capacity. That’s twice as much as the Galaxy Watch 3 (8GB) and four times what you get on the Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active, and Galaxy Watch Active 2 (all 4GB).
Galaxy Watch 4 is shaping up to be a massive upgrade to Samsung’s smartwatch lineup
More storage isn’t the only major upgrade the Galaxy Watch 4 series will bring to the table. The upcoming Samsung smartwatches will also feature a newer and more powerful processor. The same source had yesterday revealed that the new Exynos W920 SoC will bring 1.25X faster processing times and massive 8.8 times smoother graphics performance. Moreover, the new watches are getting more amount of RAM as well (1.5GB). The Galaxy Watch 3 has 1GB of RAM.
Perhaps these upgrades will complement the shift on the software front. You might be already aware the Samsung is returning to Google’s Android-based watch platform (Wear OS) after having used its in-house Tizen OS for several years. The company has co-developed a new version of Wear OS with Google. It’s calling the new platform One UI Watch, which means it should offer a similar user interface that we see in other Samsung devices.
But, more importantly, this change will address one of the biggest drawbacks of Tizen OS – poor third-party app support. Since Wear OS is nothing but Android for watches, the Galaxy Watch 4 users will have access to pretty much every major Android app you can find in the Play Store.
However, more apps also mean the device will need more amount of storage. To that end, Samsung is bumping the storage capacity in the Galaxy Watch 4 series to 16GB. With all these changes, the Galaxy Watch 4 is shaping up to be one of the biggest upgrades to the Korean firm’s smartwatch lineup.
Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic on August 11. The Galaxy Z Flip 3, Fold 3, and the Galaxy Buds 2 should also break cover on the same day. August 11 can’t come soon enough.
