ASUS goes big with its new ROG Strix Scar gaming laptops at CES

ASUS is going big at CES 2023 with a new lineup of ROG Strix gaming laptops, including a sizeable 18-inch model with some extremely powerful performance. Altogether ASUS has unveiled six new gaming laptops in the Strix family today. A little something for everyone depending on your needs and desires.

First up, there’s the new ROG Strix Scar 16 and ROG Strix Scar 18. This definitely seems to be the main theme this year. At least one 16-inch gaming laptop and one 18-inch gaming laptop. Except ASUS is taking things a step further and releasing multiples. In addition to the ROG Strix Scar 16 and 18, ASUS has also unveiled the ROG Strix G16 and G18, and then finally the ROG Strix Scar 17 and ROG Strix G17.

Each model is a little different but for the most part they all come with pretty similar specs. They all offer 40 series GPUs from NVIDIA, the latest generation Intel chips, and plenty of options for RAM and storage. Here’s a basic rundown of what you’re getting from each model.

ASUS reveals six new ROG Strix gaming laptops at CES 2023

ROG Strix Scar series

ASUS has three new laptops coming in the ROG Strix Scar line. The ROG Strix Scar 16, 17, and 18. The main difference here is the screen size. All three models are using the Nebula display here, with varying options for resolution and refresh rate. The ROG Strix Scar 16 has options for an HDR QHD display with a 240Hz refresh rate, or you can get a config without the HDR where refresh rate stays the same.

The HDR model is a Mini LED panel with a peak brightness of up to 1,100 nits according to ASUS, which means the screen gets plenty bright.

The ROG Strix Scar 18 meanwhile has a QHD option with a 240Hz refresh rate, or an FHD option with a 165Hz refresh rate. Finally, the ROG Strix Scar 17 can come with up to a WHD screen with a 240Hz refresh rate. All three models can come with up to an RTX 4090 GPU. But for the CPU things differ ever so slightly. The 16 and 18 models stick with Intel, and can come with up to an Intel Core i9-13980HX. Whereas the 17 comes with up to a next-gen AMD Ryzen-9.

They also come with up to 64GB of DDR5 RAM and up to 4TB of PCIe Gen 4 SSD storage.

ROG Strix G Series

Moving on to the ROG Strix G series laptops that ASUS announced at CES today, there’s the ROG Strix G16, G17, and G18. Screens here are basically the same across the board. With configs for the Nebula display in FHD with a 165Hz refresh rate or a QHD display with a 240Hz refresh rate.

Again, the 17-inch model here uses up to an AMD Ryzen-9 CPU, but only up to an RTX 4070 GPU. Whereas the 16-inch and 18-inch models use up to the Intel Core i9-13980HX and up to an RTX 4080 GPU. RAM goes up to 32GB of DDR5, and storage goes up to 2TB of PCIe Gen 4. And of course there’s a bevy of ports like HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4, USB-C and more.

ASUS hasn’t announced pricing for any of these laptops yet but they’re all considered the company’s flagship models. So expect them to be pricey.
