Motorola‘s next-gen foldable smartphones finally have an official launch date. The company has announced that it will unveil the Razr 40 series on June 1, 2023. A short teaser video posted on Twitter revealed the date, along with the tagline “Flip the script” for the new devices.
Motorola to launch its Razr 40 series foldables on June 1
Motorola is rumored to launch two foldable smartphones this year. But unlike Samsung, which releases one clamshell model (Flip) and one book-like foldable (Fold) every year, the Lenovo-owned company has two clamshell foldables in the pipeline. Those are expected to arrive as the Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra. While Motorola didn’t name the products in its official announcement, the teaser video did show silhouettes of two clamshell foldable smartphones, more or less confirming the rumors.
The official announcement doesn’t reveal anything about the upcoming Motorola foldables. But there have been plenty of rumors about these devices over the past few months. As you’d expect, the Razr 40 Ultra will be the flagship offering, while the vanilla Razr 40 will be an entry-level proposition. Note that earlier reports have referred to these devices with various other names. The former has been called the Motorola Razr+ 2023 or Razr 40 Pro in the past, while the latter was called the Razr 40 Lite.
The most notable difference between the two models is the cover display. The Razr 40 Ultra gets a huge display on the outside, reportedly measuring 3.5 inches diagonally with a 1056 x 1066 resolution. It covers almost the entire top half of the phone. You can use most apps on the cover display without unfolding the device. The vanilla Razr 40, meanwhile, will arrive with a tiny external screen that’s pretty much only good for quickly checking notifications and messages. The two phones may also differ in terms of internal specs, though.
The new Motorola foldables may arrive in the US
Motorola didn’t bring the Razr 2022 to North America. However, rumors have it that the company will launch the 2023 models in this part of the world, at least in the US. Both the Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra are expected to arrive stateside. It’s unclear if the devices will debut globally on June 1, though. The announcement came from Motorola’s global Twitter account and not a regional one, so this is something to note. We are still awaiting information on the market release of the new foldables, though. Thankfully, it won’t be a too long wait as the official launch is now just two weeks away.
