Dating app Tinder is rolling out a third option to express how you feel about someone’s profile. Starting Wednesday, users in Australia will be able to swipe up and ‘Super Like’ someone, in addition to the already available options of ‘Like’ and ‘Nope’, which can be expressed through swiping right or left, respectively. The feature will eventually see a global rollout later this year. In addition to swiping up, users can also Super Like someone else’s profile by tapping on the blue star next to their profile image. As a way of explaining how users will know that their profile has been Super Liked by someone, the press release from the company noted, “Users will be able to determine whether someone has Super Liked them by the presence of a blue footer on a given profile. The receiver is still in control of whom they want to match with, but the existence of a Super Like can influence that decision”.
While Tinder revealed that users will only be granted a limited number of Super Likes initially, the company is yet to disclose whether more can actually be bought as part of in-app purchases. The CEO and co-founder of Tinder, Mr. Sean Rad, said that he believed Super Likes will be a much-in-demand commodity, going forward. According to him, “Because they’re so limited in number, a Super Like, or a ‘swipe up’, sends a more powerful signal, conveying an especially high level of interest. People like to know that someone finds them special, and we think this will lead to even better matches”.
While critics on various internet platforms like Reddit have described the new feature as juvenile, it has seemingly already managed to find an enthusiastic response from its target audience, with #SuperLike trending on Twitter in the immediate aftermath of the announcement from Tinder. The company has also released a video starring Victoria’s Secret models Erin Heatherton and Nina Adgal, to publicize the roll out of Super Like. The video, predictably, has also managed to generate disparate comments and divide public opinion; something that’s not entirely new to Tinder in the first place. It remains to be seen as to how this plays out in the long run, but as of now, the announcement and the impending rollout of the new feature has given the app a lot of publicity; not that it needed any, as it is already one of the highest downloaded dating apps on both Google Play as well as the Apple App Store.
