4K-Enabled Nest Cam IQ Announced, Priced At $300

Nest on Wednesday announced the Nest Cam IQ, its latest security camera with support for recording 4K video that will be released in select markets in the coming weeks. The camera that has already been the subject of several rumors earlier this year was designed specifically for indoor use, the Alphabet-owned consumer electronics manufacturer said, implying that its new device isn’t meant to replace any of its previous offerings and is instead meant to complement them, save for the original Nest Cam. The Nest Cam IQ is now available for pre-orders in the United States, priced at $300, or $250 for those who are willing to order two. Consumers in the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands are also able to place advanced orders on the device, though its European price is somewhat higher, amounting to €349, or approximately $390. Alphabet’s connected camera manufacturer is also planning to open pre-orders for the device in more European countries, including Germany, Spain, Italy, and Austria, with the firm saying that consumers in those markets will have the option of ordering the Next Cam IQ from June 13. The device still doesn’t have a specific release date attached to it, though more details on the matter will likely be available shortly.

The camera itself is essentially an evolution of the original Nest Cam, with added support for recording 4K HDR video, 12x digital zoom, and night vision. The device isn’t able to stream 4K video and can instead only record it for later viewing, though it reportedly boasts extremely powerful speakers and three microphones that support noise cancellation and can even eliminate echoes. The Alphabet-owned company revealed that the Nest Cam IQ boasts face identification, two-step verification, encryption, a picture-in-picture mode, and a broad range of other features, many of which are already supported by the original Nest Cam, but only with a $10 monthly subscription.

The company still didn’t completely eliminate its subscription-based business model with the Nest Cam IQ, though consumers will likely feel less pressured to pay a monthly fee for extra services with the firm’s latest device.
