The OnePlus 8T is right around the corner, and a ton of information surfaced up until this point. Before we begin, it’s worth noting that the phone’s codename is ‘Kebab’. The device will arrive alongside quite a few additional devices, it seems. The OnePlus 8T may be the only member of the 8T series this year, actually. OnePlus has confirmed that the 8T Pro variant will not launch, at all. OnePlus’ CEO even shared a reason behind this decision.
The OnePlus 8T Pro guide was discovered on the company’s website quite recently. That hinted that the ‘8T Pro’ model may arrive after all. We cannot say anything for sure just yet, but considering that the 8T Pro hasn’t been mentioned anywhere else. We still believe that the 8T will be the only model. That would make sense for the company as the OnePlus 7T was far, far more successful than the 7T Pro. The 7T Pro was almost identical to the 7 Pro, while the 7T brought a lot of bang for your buck.
We’re really not sure what can OnePlus do this year to make the 8T Pro stand out, which is why we think the 8T will be the only variant. The company had already confirmed the name of the upcoming device, officially. So, we know that it will be called the OnePlus 8T 5G. A mysterious ‘OnePlus 8T Limited Edition‘ variant was also mentioned by a tipster.
This article will be regularly updated with new information on the OnePlus 8T (this is a preview article) — both official teasers and credible leaks, rumors, and insider claims — as it becomes available in the run-up to the release of the upcoming Android smartphone. The last update was made on October 9.
The OnePlus 8T may include fan-favorite flat display, unlike its siblings
When it comes to the phone’s design, well, it’ll look somewhat similar to the OnePlus 8 phones, but not too similar. A device did surface in OnePlus’ recent software update, Android 11 Developer Preview 4 update for the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro. That could be just a placeholder image, but it may not be. You can check it out below this paragraph. As you can see, the phone does resemble the other two devices quite a bit, though it sports a flat display, not a curved one. We can only see its front side here, though.
Now, a much better leak comes from Pricebaba. That website, in collaboration with OnLeaks, shared a bunch of OnePlus 8T renders. These are CAD-based renders, and are showing the phone from all sides, pretty much. You can also see the back side of the phone, including its camera module. That camera module will look different this time around, and be located in the top-left corner of the phone’s back. The phone will include four cameras on the back, it seems.
The device includes a display camera hole in the top-left corner, same as on the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro. Its bezels are extremely thin, and it seems like the bottom bezel is not thicker than the rest at all. The power / lock button is located on the right-hand side, as is the alert slider, which sits above the power / lock key. The volume up and down buttons can be found on the left. The phone’s corners are rounded, as are its display corners. This smartphone will almost certainly be made out of metal and glass, just like the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro. The phone will be taller, wider, and thicker than the OnePlus 8. The company’s CEO confirmed that the phone will be 8.4mm thick, and that it will weigh 188 grams.
Following those CAD-based renders that surfaced way ahead of time, the phone’s final design also surfaced. It surfaced in seemingly-official renders. The Aquamarine Green variant got shown from all angles in these renders, while one render of the Lunar Silver model also appeared. You can check out those images in the gallery below.
Large 120Hz display, fast charging, and 5G
The OnePlus 8T is expected to become the most powerful smartphone in the company’s lineup, but it won’t be much more powerful than the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro. OnePlus may even create a phone that is on the same level as the OnePlus 8 Pro, or even slightly inferior in some ways. In any case, we’re expecting to see the Snapdragon 865 Plus on the inside of this phone. A recent rumor suggested that the Snapdragon 865 may be included instead, but that is not as likely. OnePlus will almost certainly look to include the latest and greatest SoC here.
In addition to that, we’ll get a fullHD+ display with a high refresh rate. The OnePlus 8T will include a flat display, which will measure 6.55 inches, the company confirmed. This will be a 120Hz display, so it will be an improvement over what the OnePlus 8 had to offer. The phone is also expected to include 8GB / 12GB of RAM with 128GB / 256GB of internal storage. Just to be clear, you won’t be able to expand that storage.
Android 11 will come pre-installed on the device, along with OnePlus’ OxygenOS 11 skin. The phone will offer 5G support, and an NFC chip will be included. The device will support fast charging, it will ship with 65W fast charging, and a dual-battery setup. You can expect to get a 4,500mAh battery pack here. Wireless charging won’t be included, by the way.
A 48-megapixel or 64-megapixel main camera
Some information regarding this phone’s camera setup did surface back in July. An APK teardown revealed that the phone will include a 64-megapixel unit (Sony’s IMX689 sensor). That camera will probably utilize pixel binning to create 16-megapixel final product shots. Some other information claims that the phone will include the same main camera as the OnePlus 8 Pro, a 48-megapixel unit (IMX686 from Sony).
The latter scenario is more probable, if we’re being honest. OnePlus will likely recycle what it included in the OnePlus 8 Pro, and that sensor is quite powerful. As a reminder, the OnePlus 8 Pro comes with a newer 48-megapixel sensor compared to the OnePlus 8, considerably newer, in fact. With the right software, that sensor can take excellent images, as OnePlus proved with the OnePlus 8 Pro.
So, in addition to that 48-megapixel camera, you can expect to see a 16-megapixel ultra-wide camera. A 5-megapixel macro unit is also expected to be included, and the same goes for a 2-megapixel portrait camera. A 32-megapixel front-facing camera is rumored to be included on the front. The company already teased the phone’s camera performance with a gorgeous cityscape photo.
The phone may be considerably pricier than the OnePlus 7T was last year
Okay, and what about the phone’s availability and pricing? Well, the OnePlus 7T launched in September, and it became available in September as well. All that happened at the end of the month. Well, the OnePlus 8T will arrive a bit later on, in October. The company has confirmed that the device will become official on October 14. The phone will become available to purchase soon after it launches, by the way. The OnePlus 8T is expected to offer a really compelling price tag as well.
Now, in terms of its price tag… two rather conflicting reports surfaced. One of them claims that the device will be considerably more expensive than the OnePlus 7T. It claims that the 8GB RAM model will cost €799, and the 12GB RAM model will be priced at €899. Another rumor shared completely different info. It said that the phone will start at €599, while the 12GB RAM model will cost €699. That is a €200 difference between the two price tags. The first info comes from a tipster called Chun, while the other comes from Amazon India and is relayed by Ishan Agarwal. Chances are that the second information is accurate, though, so keep that in mind. The OnePlus 8T will likely cost less than the OnePlus 8.
